OJSC North-Western Shipping Company is the largest carrier operating vessels of mixed “river-sea” navigation in the Russian system of waterways.
Carriage of bulk and general cargoes by "river-sea" motor vessels between European ports, ports in North Africa and the Middle East are the basis of the business activities of the North-Western Shipping Company.
The main advantage of the North-Western Shipping Company fleet over the fleet of other marine carriers is its ability to deliver cargoes to inland waterways ports and shallow-water sea ports, where there are restrictions on the draft, berth lengths etc. About 60% of the transport operations of the Shipping Company consist in the transportation of cargoes to ports with restrictions on vessel drafts. A usual consignment of goods transported ranges from 3000 to 5000 tons. Thanks to its competitive advantages, the North-Western Shipping Company successfully operates on the European Short Sea market and transports goods from Russian river and estuary ports
Historically, 60% of cargo transport operations by the Shipping Company are carried out in the basins of the North and Baltic Seas, where the main cargoes are ferrous metals, chemical fertilizers and timber. The share of transport operations by the company’s fleet in the Southern Seas basins is 40% and is mainly represented by grain and scrap metal.
All the ships of the North-Western Shipping Company are registered with the Russian International Registry of Vessels and are operated under the Russian flag, which gives them the possibility not only to carry cargoes by sea, but also to enter ports of the Russian inland waterways.
